# SRC00 - Visible supplied source

This is the visible conversation material supplied for this task. It begins mid-example and includes an explicit earlier-content omission. Unseen text is not reconstructed. Transport wrappers and message IDs are omitted; source section codes are preserved. The extracted text is arranged in its original reading order.

# Visible source transcript: initial fragment, IK00-IZ00, and AA00-AJ00

This transcription preserves the source text visible in this conversation. Earlier content was omitted from the supplied conversation and is not represented here. Code-block transport identifiers have been removed. The first fragment begins mid-example.

    14:32 UTC.

Over:

```text
Unable to cancel order.
```

IK00 - Composition rule: include the user's next move, not merely the developer's diagnosis

Weak:

```text
ECONNREFUSED 10.0.0.8:5432
```

Civilised and useful:

```text
I beg your pardon, but the database host 10.0.0.8 was reached and declined the
connection on port 5432.
No database operation began.
Please verify that PostgreSQL is running and listening on that address.
Reference: DB-CONNECT-REFUSED
```

IL00 - Composition rule: preserve technical detail without making the user translate it

```text
Pardon the interruption. The upload could not be completed because the server
returned HTTP 413, meaning the submitted body exceeded its configured limit.
File: <file>
Size: <size>
Server limit: <limit>
Please upload a smaller file or use <large_upload_method>.
Technical status: HTTP 413 Payload Too Large
Reference: <request_id>
```

IM00 - Composition rule: make consequential failure asymmetrical

For ordinary errors, brevity is welcome.

For money, deletion, deployment, security, identity, permissions, or external side effects, the message should become more explicit:

```text
Pardon the interruption.
Deployment <deployment_id> reached the production environment, but health
verification failed afterward.
Confirmed:
  Version <version> was deployed to <instances_completed> instances.
Not confirmed:
  <instances_uncertain>
Automatic rollback:
  <rollback_status>
Please do not begin a second deployment until the environment status at
<status_location> has been reviewed.
Reference: <reference>
```

IN00 - Composition rule: use humour in the ceremony, not in the diagnosis

Acceptable:

```text
The printer has completed the philosophical portion of the exercise and now
requests paper.
```

Because it immediately continues with:

```text
Printer: <printer>
Pages remaining: <pages>
Please refill tray <tray>.
```

Poor:

```text
Whoops! The printer is having a bad day :)
```

The first is whimsical but operational. The second spends the user's attention without helping.

IO00 - Composition rule: the program may apologise, but should not grovel

Good:

```text
I beg your pardon, but the requested file could not be found.
```

Too much:

```text
I am inconsolably ashamed and beg your eternal forgiveness for my miserable
failure to locate this file.
```

The voice should resemble a competent clerk with excellent manners, not an employee facing execution.

IP00 - Composition rule: never blame the user when a neutral fact will do

Prefer:

```text
The value <value> is outside the permitted range.
```

Over:

```text
You entered an invalid value.
```

Prefer:

```text
The confirmation phrase did not match the required wording.
```

Over:

```text
You typed the confirmation incorrectly.
```

IQ00 - Composition rule: do not over-promise recovery

Use:

```text
Process termination was requested. Detached child processes cannot be
guaranteed to have stopped.
```

Not:

```text
Everything has been safely stopped.
```

Use:

```text
The transaction was rolled back successfully.
```

Only when rollback is actually known to have succeeded.

IR00 - Composition rule: give references that mean something

A useful reference should identify a particular failure instance or a stable diagnostic category.

```text
Reference: UPLOAD-413
Request: 8f1c7d...
Occurred: 2026-09-26T17:42:03Z
```

For end users, one reference may suffice:

```text
Reference: 8f1c7d
```

For developer-facing output:

```text
Diagnostic: STORAGE-002
Correlation: 8f1c7d...
Component: AttachmentService
Operation: CreateUpload
```

IS00 - Composition rule: redact without becoming mysterious

```text
Payment method: Visa ending 1842
Email: a***@example.com
Token: [redacted]
File: /workspace/reports/quarterly.csv
Database host: db.internal.example
```

Avoid leaking:

```text
Authorization: Bearer <real_token>
Password: <real_password>
ConnectionString: <connection_string_with_secret>
```

IT00 - Composition rule: preserve exact values when the exact value is the problem

```text
Expected date format: YYYY-MM-DD
Received: 09/10/26
```

```text
Expected maximum: 100
Received: 101
```

```text
Expected header: Content-Type: application/json
Received: Content-Type: text/plain
```

This is far more useful than:

```text
Invalid input.
```

IU00 - Composition rule: make automatic recovery visible

```text
The first request to <service> timed out after <timeout>.
A second attempt succeeded at <time>.
No action is required, but the delay has been recorded under reference
<reference>.
```

Or:

```text
The preferred server was unavailable, so the request was completed by
<failover_server>.
Result: successful
Additional latency: <duration>
```

IV00 - Composition rule: make automatic fallback visible when it changes semantics

```text
The requested PDF renderer <renderer> was unavailable.
The document was rendered using <fallback_renderer>, which may differ in
<known_difference>.
Please review the generated document before distribution.
```

Do not silently substitute when the output may materially differ.

IW00 - Composition rule: reserve grand ceremony for rare moments

The ordinary voice can remain concise:

```text
Pardon me, but "2026-02-30" is not a calendar date. Please choose another.
```

A destructive production failure may deserve the full correspondence:

```text
To the Respected Operator,
I am sorry to report that deployment <id> reached three of five production
instances before the health threshold failed.
The rollout has been halted.
Three instances currently report version <new_version>.
Two remain on <old_version>.
Automatic rollback has not been attempted because <reason>.
Please review <status_location> before authorising further changes.
Reference: <reference>
```

A00 - Distilled model

The previous collection becomes much cleaner if the individual messages are treated as compositions from a relatively small number of reusable rhetorical patterns.

The most important distinction is this:

```text
A message is not a template.
A message is assembled from several phrase families:
[COURTESY]
[EVENT]
[CAUSE]
[CONSEQUENCE]
[SAFETY / STATE]
[ACTION]
[CLOSING / REFERENCE]
```

For example:

```text
I beg your pardon,
but the requested file could not be opened
because it is already in use by another application.
No changes have been made.
Please close the other application and try once more.
Reference: FILE-006
```

Here:

```text
COURTESY     = I beg your pardon,
EVENT        = but the requested file could not be opened
CAUSE        = because it is already in use by another application.
SAFETY       = No changes have been made.
ACTION       = Please close the other application and try once more.
REFERENCE    = Reference: FILE-006
```

This is the higher-level system I would use instead of maintaining hundreds of independently written messages.

B00 - The seven-part grammar

Almost every useful civilised diagnostic can be expressed through seven optional layers:

```text
1. Courtesy
2. Predicament
3. Particulars
4. Consequence
5. Assurance
6. Remedy
7. Closure
```

They answer seven different questions:

| Layer | Purpose | Question answered |
|---|---|---|
| Courtesy | establishes tone | How do we enter the conversation? |
| Predicament | states the failure | What happened? |
| Particulars | gives context | To what, where, when, why? |
| Consequence | explains effect | What does this mean? |
| Assurance | limits uncertainty | What did NOT happen? |
| Remedy | gives next action | What should I do? |
| Closure | ends cleanly | What reference or sign-off remains? |

A short error might use only three:

```text
[COURTESY] + [PREDICAMENT] + [REMEDY]
```

A dangerous payment or deployment failure might use all seven.

The structure remains stable while the language varies.

C00 - Pattern family 1: The apology

This is the broadest opening family.

Its semantic meaning is:

```text
I acknowledge that I am interrupting you with an undesirable result.
```

The cleanest members are:

```text
I beg your pardon, but...
Pardon me, but...
I do beg your pardon, but...
I am afraid...
I am sorry to report that...
I regret to report that...
My apologies, but...
Please accept my apologies, but...
I must apologise, but...
I am rather sorry to report that...
```

The more theatrical members are useful when the product deliberately wants character:

```text
I am deeply sorry to report that...
I am exceedingly sorry to report that...
I confess this with considerable embarrassment...
I must, with some embarrassment, report that...
I am inconsolably ashamed to report that...
I beg your forgiveness for this regrettable failure...
I must beg your pardon for a rather unfortunate failure...
```

The phrase you highlighted can therefore be retained, but controlled.

Instead of:

```text
I am inconsolably ashamed and beg your eternal forgiveness for my miserable failure.
```

A usable version would be:

```text
I am inconsolably ashamed to report that this particular endeavour has ended
rather less successfully than either of us might have hoped.
```

Or:

```text
With considerable embarrassment, I must beg your pardon: the operation has
failed before reaching a satisfactory conclusion.
```

Or, slightly more extravagant:

```text
I am deeply ashamed to make such an admission, but this operation has defeated
me on the present occasion.
```

The joke remains, but the message can immediately return to useful information.

D00 - Pattern family 2: The interruption

This family says:

```text
Something requires your attention before we continue.
```

Its common forms are:

```text
Pardon the interruption, but...
Forgive the interruption, but...
A brief interruption, if you please.
May I trouble you for a moment?
If I may interrupt for one small matter...
A small matter requires your attention.
One detail requires attention before we proceed.
There is one matter we should settle before continuing.
A brief formality remains before we proceed.
Before we continue, one small matter requires your attention.
```

This differs from the apology.

"I beg your pardon" is primarily an apology.

"Pardon the interruption" is primarily a transition.

So they should not be separate full templates. They are members of different opening families.

E00 - Pattern family 3: The regretful report

This is slightly more formal than the ordinary apology.

Its semantic shape is:

```text
I have information to report, and unfortunately it is unfavourable.
```

Examples:

```text
I regret to report that...
I am sorry to report that...
I regret that...
It is with some regret that I must report...
I am afraid I have an unfortunate result to report.
I must report an unfortunate circumstance.
It falls to me to report that...
I am obliged to report that...
I must reluctantly report that...
```

More Bespoke-like:

```text
It is with considerable regret that I must report a small but decisive obstacle.
```

```text
It falls to me, somewhat unhappily, to report that the requested operation
cannot presently be completed.
```

```text
I should have preferred to bring better news, but...
```

That last one is particularly useful because it is amusing without sacrificing clarity.

F00 - Pattern family 4: The awkward predicament

This is one of the strongest stylistic devices from the Bespoke material.

Instead of describing something as an "error", treat it as an awkward circumstance.

Core vocabulary:

```text
an awkward predicament
a regrettable circumstance
an unfortunate circumstance
a small difficulty
a slight complication
a modest obstacle
an administrative difficulty
a scheduling difficulty
a disagreement
a conflict
a question of precedence
a question of identity
a question of authority
a matter of timing
a matter of permission
a matter of interpretation
a matter requiring clarification
a small incompatibility
an unexpected complication
a rather inconvenient development
```

Examples:

```text
A small difficulty has arisen.
```

```text
An awkward predicament has presented itself.
```

```text
A slight disagreement has arisen between the requested operation and the
permissions presently available.
```

```text
A question of precedence requires resolution before we proceed.
```

```text
A modest disagreement has arisen between the requested date and the calendar.
```

The important insight is that this language describes the category of problem before revealing the exact technical cause.

G00 - Pattern family 5: The personified institution

Bespoke works because software components behave like institutions, clerks, courts, offices, hosts, custodians, or correspondents.

Instead of:

```text
Database connection failed.
```

You can write:

```text
The records office is not presently receiving visitors.
```

But useful diagnostics should then immediately ground the metaphor:

```text
The records office is not presently receiving visitors.
Database: <host>
Port: <port>
Connection result: refused
```

Useful institutional metaphors include:

```text
the records office       = database
the archives             = file storage
the post room             = email or messaging
the gatekeeper            = authentication
the household             = application
the establishment         = system or organisation
the clerk                 = parser or validator
the courier               = network transport
the address clerk         = DNS
the calendar              = scheduling system
the storeroom             = inventory
the cashier               = payment system
the registry              = metadata or identity store
the groundskeeper         = garbage collection / cleanup
the concierge             = routing / orchestration
the waiting room          = queue
the correspondence desk   = API
the workshop              = build system
the examination board     = tests / validation
```

The rule should be:

```text
Metaphor first.
Technical reality immediately afterward.
```

Not metaphor instead of reality.

H00 - Pattern family 6: The courteous refusal

This is distinct from failure.

It means:

```text
I understand the request, but I will not perform it under the present conditions.
```

Useful forms:

```text
I must respectfully decline to...
I am afraid I cannot presently...
I cannot in good conscience proceed with...
I should not like to proceed without...
I must refrain from...
The request must remain unexecuted until...
The operation must wait until...
I must decline the request in its present form.
The request has therefore been respectfully declined.
```

More playful:

```text
I should not like to take such a liberty without explicit permission.
```

```text
I could proceed by making an assumption, but that would be rather presumptuous.
```

```text
I am reluctant to act where the authority to do so has not been established.
```

This family is excellent for security, permissions, destructive actions, ambiguity, and consent.

I00 - Pattern family 7: The refusal to guess

This deserves its own family because it expresses one of the best principles in the entire style.

The system explicitly refuses to invent missing information.

Core phrases:

```text
I should not like to presume.
I should not like to guess.
It would be presumptuous to choose on your behalf.
I would rather ask than make an assumption.
No assumption has been made on your behalf.
I have deliberately refrained from guessing.
I cannot confidently distinguish between...
The information presently available does not permit a safe conclusion.
Rather than invent an answer, I must ask for...
```

Examples:

```text
I could make a plausible guess here, but I should not like to disguise
plausibility as knowledge.
```

```text
Two interpretations appear equally respectable, and I should not like to
choose between them without your instruction.
```

```text
No default has been selected, as doing so would amount to making a decision
on your behalf.
```

This is especially strong for developer tools and AI-assisted software.

J00 - Pattern family 8: The gentle correction

This family covers invalid input without blaming the user.

Instead of:

```text
You entered the wrong confirmation phrase.
```

Use:

```text
I beg your pardon, but the confirmation phrase did not quite match the wording
required for this operation.
```

Or:

```text
Pardon me, but the reply differs from the exact wording required for a request
of this consequence.
```

Or more ceremonial:

```text
I am afraid the reply, though perfectly understandable, is not sufficiently
explicit for an operation of this consequence.
```

Then:

```text
Please type exactly:
yes, please proceed
```

This creates a general transformation rule:

```text
"You did X wrong"
        ->
"The supplied X does not satisfy Y"
        ->
"I beg your pardon, but the supplied X does not quite satisfy Y."
```

Examples:

```text
You entered an invalid date.
```

becomes:

```text
I beg your pardon, but the date provided does not correspond to a day recognised
by the calendar.
```

```text
Your password is wrong.
```

becomes:

```text
Pardon me, but those credentials did not secure admission.
```

```text
You forgot a required field.
```

becomes:

```text
One small formality remains: <field> has not yet been provided.
```

K00 - Pattern family 9: The self-deprecating machine

This is where phrases such as "inconsolably ashamed" belong.

The important rule is that the machine may mock itself, but should not obscure the diagnosis.

Low intensity:

```text
My apologies; this difficulty is ours.
The request appears perfectly reasonable. The failure is on our side.
I am afraid I have made rather a poor showing of this request.
```

Medium intensity:

```text
With some embarrassment, I must admit that the application has failed to
complete a perfectly reasonable request.
```

```text
I should have preferred to demonstrate greater competence on this occasion.
```

```text
The request was entirely respectable; the execution, regrettably, was not.
```

High intensity:

```text
I am deeply ashamed to report that this perfectly reasonable request has
exposed a deficiency in my own arrangements.
```

```text
I am inconsolably ashamed to confess that the application has failed at a task
it had every reason to understand.
```

```text
With all due embarrassment, I must confess that the machinery has made rather
a spectacle of itself.
```

Extreme, for rare fatal-error screens:

```text
I beg your forgiveness. The request was sound, the instructions were clear,
and the failure is entirely ours to explain.
```

The comedy comes from disproportionate politeness, not from sacrificing accuracy.

L00 - Pattern family 10: The compliment before disappointment

This is another useful Bespoke mechanism.

It acknowledges that something was almost right.

Patterns:

```text
Your request was impeccably phrased, but...
The request is perfectly reasonable, but...
Everything is in excellent order except...
The file is perfectly respectable, but...
The value is perfectly well formed, but...
The credentials appear entirely proper, but...
Your instructions are admirably clear, but...
The operation is entirely valid, but...
The configuration is nearly impeccable, save for...
```

Examples:

```text
Your request is perfectly reasonable, but the account presently lacks the
permission required to carry it out.
```

```text
The file is perfectly respectable, merely rather larger than this service is
prepared to entertain in a single sitting.
```

```text
Your petition was impeccably phrased, but it omitted the one permission needed
to carry it out.
```

This gives the message warmth without blaming the user.

M00 - Pattern family 11: Anthropomorphic restraint

Another recurring style device is to describe software as declining, objecting, refusing, awaiting, or being unconvinced.

Examples:

```text
The calendar has declined to recognise that date.
The filesystem has declined the proposed amendment.
The server is not presently receiving visitors.
The archive remains under seal.
The certificate has failed to establish its identity.
The printer requests paper.
The database has asked this transaction to withdraw.
The file is presently engaged elsewhere.
The service has not yet acknowledged the request.
The permission system remains unconvinced.
The queue is presently fully occupied.
The network has not returned our correspondence.
```

This is useful, but should be applied selectively.

The pattern is:

```text
<technical component> + <civilised human action>
```

Examples:

```text
The payment provider declined to authorise the charge.
```

```text
The archive has arrived under seal.
```

```text
The records office is presently unable to receive our inquiry.
```

N00 - Pattern family 12: The "no harm done" assurance

This is perhaps the most operationally useful family.

Its meaning:

```text
Here is what definitely did NOT happen.
```

Common phrases:

```text
Nothing has been changed.
Nothing has been deleted.
Nothing has been overwritten.
Nothing has been charged.
Nothing has been sent.
Nothing has been scheduled.
Nothing has been published.
Nothing has been deployed.
Nothing has been committed.
No request has been submitted.
No substitute has been selected.
No assumption has been made.
No partial result has been presented as complete.
The original file remains intact.
Your existing configuration remains unchanged.
The transaction has been rolled back.
```

Stylistic variants:

```text
No harm has been done.
```

```text
Nothing irreversible has taken place.
```

```text
The existing file has been left exactly as we found it.
```

```text
I have taken the liberty of changing precisely nothing.
```

That last line is particularly good for this style.

O00 - Pattern family 13: The uncertainty declaration

This family is for cases where the application genuinely does not know the final state.

Never say:

```text
Something went wrong.
```

Say:

```text
I cannot truthfully confirm whether <operation> completed.
```

Other forms:

```text
The final state could not be established.
I must report an uncertainty rather than invent an answer.
The available evidence does not permit a definitive conclusion.
I cannot honestly tell you whether...
The request may have completed before communication was lost.
The last state I can confirm is...
Anything after <time> remains uncertain.
```

More stylised:

```text
I should prefer an awkward uncertainty to a confident fiction.
```

```text
I cannot, in good conscience, pronounce the operation successful when the
evidence does not permit it.
```

```text
The matter has concluded beyond the reach of reliable observation.
```

This family works especially well in distributed systems.

P00 - Pattern family 14: The consequential warning

This means:

```text
Please pay attention because repeating the action could make matters worse.
```

Useful forms:

```text
Please do not repeat the operation yet.
Before attempting this again, please...
A second attempt may duplicate...
It would be unwise to retry until...
Please first verify...
No further action should be taken until...
```

More civilised:

```text
I should strongly prefer that we not repeat the request until its first
attempt has been accounted for.
```

```text
Before we trouble the service a second time, please verify whether the first
request has already completed.
```

```text
A second submission at this stage might be rather too enthusiastic.
```

That final sentence is exactly the kind of restrained joke that fits this system.

Q00 - Pattern family 15: The remedy

The final actionable instruction should normally be plain.

Do not make the action itself excessively theatrical.

Good:

```text
Please close the file and try again.
Please sign in again.
Please provide a value between 1 and 100.
Please choose another date.
Please verify the payment status before retrying.
Please contact the workspace owner for access.
Please reconnect the device.
Please install version <version> or later.
```

You can add light politeness:

```text
Please kindly...
If you would be so good as to...
When convenient, please...
Might I ask you to...
Would you mind...
```

But this is where restraint matters.

Bad:

```text
Might I humbly beseech you, at such time as your affairs permit, to consider
perhaps closing the file...
```

The opening may be ornate. The remedy should be unmistakable.

R00 - Pattern family 16: The exact ceremony

Some operations benefit from deliberately formal wording because the friction is useful.

Confirmation:

```text
To continue, please type exactly:
<confirmation_phrase>
To retire the request without changes, type:
<cancellation_phrase>
```

Wrong reply:

```text
I beg your pardon, but that reply, though perfectly understandable, is not
sufficiently explicit for an operation of this consequence.
Please type exactly:
<confirmation_phrase>
or:
<cancellation_phrase>
```

Missing consent:

```text
The conversation concluded before explicit consent was received.
I have therefore taken the conservative course and done nothing.
```

This is one place where the ceremonial style becomes functional UX, not merely comedy.

S00 - Pattern family 17: Graceful retirement

Instead of "abort", "kill", "terminate", or "cancel", the program can use retirement language.

Examples:

```text
The request has been retired.
The operation has been invited to conclude.
The worker has been asked to retire.
The task has withdrawn from proceedings.
The process has concluded its service.
The request has been respectfully abandoned.
The operation has been brought to an orderly close.
```

For user cancellation:

```text
As you wish. The request has been retired without execution.
```

For process termination:

```text
The process was invited to conclude, but did not do so within <timeout>.
Termination was therefore attempted.
```

Technical truth still appears eventually.

T00 - Pattern family 18: Formal blame assignment

A particularly useful high-level distinction is who owns the difficulty.

There are four voices.

User-supplied information:

```text
One detail requires correction.
```

System failure:

```text
Your request appears sound; the difficulty is ours.
```

Dependency failure:

```text
Your request is in order, but a service upon which it depends is not presently
available.
```

Ambiguous responsibility:

```text
A difficulty has arisen while processing the request.
```

That allows the system to avoid accusatory language while still being precise.

U00 - Pattern family 19: The distinguished technical fact

The civilised language should often lead directly into brutally precise engineering detail.

Example:

```text
I beg your pardon, but the records office is not presently receiving visitors.
Technical particulars:
Host: db.internal.example
Port: 5432
Result: ECONNREFUSED
Attempt: 3 of 3
Elapsed: 5.2 seconds
```

This contrast is one of the strongest stylistic effects available.

Polite prose:

```text
A small disagreement has arisen.
```

Then exact fact:

```text
Expected SHA-256:
<expected>
Observed SHA-256:
<actual>
```

The result feels unusual without becoming useless.

V00 - Pattern family 20: The elegant understatement

Much of the humour comes from describing serious technical problems with excessive composure.

Examples:

```text
This is mildly inconvenient.
```

```text
The result is not quite what one would hope.
```

```text
The transaction has encountered an unfortunate difference of opinion.
```

```text
The two threads remain excessively courteous toward one another.
```

```text
The filesystem appears unconvinced by our authority.
```

```text
The deployment has not distinguished itself.
```

```text
The configuration has taken a rather adventurous interpretation of the schema.
```

```text
The requested allocation is somewhat more ambitious than available memory permits.
```

```text
The server's response was, regrettably, silence.
```

```text
The certificate's credentials have not survived scrutiny.
```

Understatement should precede, not replace, the precise explanation.

W00 - Pattern family 21: The exaggerated confession

This is where the more theatrical wording can deliberately appear.

Examples arranged by intensity:

```text
With some embarrassment, I must admit...
```

```text
I confess this with considerable embarrassment...
```

```text
I am deeply ashamed to report...
```

```text
I am inconsolably ashamed to confess...
```

```text
I must beg your forgiveness for this regrettable display...
```

```text
I should like to offer my most profound apologies for the machinery's
undistinguished performance.
```

```text
I beg your indulgence while I confess that the application has made rather a
spectacle of itself.
```

```text
With profound regret, I must admit that this operation has ended in disgrace.
```

The pattern should generally be reserved for:

```text
internal defects
unexpected crashes
fatal errors
absurd edge cases
deliberately theatrical command-line tools
```

Not ordinary validation.

X00 - Pattern family 22: The positive ending

A civilised system should not reserve its personality entirely for failure.

Success:

```text
With pleasure, the matter is now in order.
Everything appears to be in excellent order.
The request has been carried out successfully.
Your request has been attended to.
The operation has concluded without incident.
The file has been prepared for your consideration.
The requested change is now in effect.
Our business here is satisfactorily concluded.
```

Successful with caveat:

```text
The operation has concluded successfully, though one small matter deserves
your attention.
```

No-op:

```text
Everything was already in order, so no changes were required.
```

Idempotent operation:

```text
The requested state had already been achieved. I therefore took the liberty
of doing nothing further.
```

That last phrase is very much in the style you are after.

Y00 - Pattern family 23: The polite empty state

Not every absence is an error.

Examples:

```text
Nothing has taken residence here yet.
```

```text
No records have yet presented themselves.
```

```text
The collection is presently enjoying an admirable degree of emptiness.
```

```text
There is nothing to report, which on this occasion is entirely good news.
```

```text
No matching records were found. The search itself completed successfully.
```

This prevents empty states from sounding like failures.

Z00 - Pattern family 24: The "nearly right" diagnostic

This is valuable in developer tools.

Examples:

```text
The request is very nearly in order.
```

```text
Everything is correct except for one small disagreement.
```

```text
The configuration is sound in principle, but <setting> requires attention.
```

```text
The programme has acquitted itself admirably until line <line>.
```

```text
The document is perfectly readable except for <specific_problem>.
```

```text
Your petition is otherwise impeccable.
```

This makes diagnostics feel less hostile while preserving specificity.

AA00 - The distilled vocabulary of openings

Rather than hundreds of complete messages, the core opening vocabulary can be reduced to roughly these families:

| Intent | Canonical phrase |
|---|---|
| apology | `I beg your pardon, but...` |
| interruption | `Pardon the interruption, but...` |
| regret | `I regret to report that...` |
| bad news | `I should have preferred to bring better news, but...` |
| minor obstacle | `A small matter requires your attention.` |
| uncertainty | `I should not like to presume.` |
| refusal | `I must respectfully decline to...` |
| correction | `One small detail requires correction.` |
| system fault | `Your request is sound; the difficulty is ours.` |
| dependency fault | `Your request is in order, but <service> is not presently available.` |
| confession | `With some embarrassment, I must admit...` |
| theatrical confession | `I am inconsolably ashamed to confess...` |
| caution | `A moment of caution, if you please.` |
| ambiguity | `Two equally respectable interpretations have presented themselves.` |
| conflict | `A small disagreement has arisen.` |
| security | `A matter of authority prevents us from proceeding.` |
| timing | `A small chronological difficulty has arisen.` |
| identity | `A question of identity remains unresolved.` |
| precedence | `A question of precedence requires resolution.` |
| success | `With pleasure, the matter is now in order.` |

AB00 - The distilled vocabulary of failure verbs

Ordinary software vocabulary:

```text
failed
errored
crashed
rejected
invalid
timed out
aborted
killed
blocked
conflicted
```

Civilised equivalents:

```text
could not be completed
did not reach a satisfactory conclusion
encountered a difficulty
was respectfully declined
could not be accepted
outlived its allotted time
was retired
was invited to conclude
must await another matter
has encountered a disagreement
has not survived scrutiny
cannot presently proceed
has not been established
remains unresolved
```

The technical term can still appear afterward:

```text
The operation did not reach a satisfactory conclusion.
Technical result: timeout after 30 seconds.
```

AC00 - The distilled vocabulary of causality

These are the bridges between the polite opening and actual diagnosis:

```text
because...
as...
since...
owing to...
on account of...
for the rather specific reason that...
because the following prerequisite is absent...
because the following condition was not satisfied...
because <resource> is presently...
after <component> reported...
when <event> occurred...
while attempting to...
during <stage>...
before <stage> could begin...
```

Especially useful:

```text
for the rather specific reason that...
```

Example:

```text
I beg your pardon, but the operation cannot proceed for the rather specific
reason that the destination contains only 12 MB of free space while the
requested export requires approximately 84 MB.
```

AD00 - The distilled vocabulary of assurances

Core patterns:

```text
Nothing has been changed.
Nothing irreversible has taken place.
No request was submitted.
No charge was made.
No file was overwritten.
No data was discarded.
The original remains intact.
Your current work remains available.
The existing state has been preserved.
No assumption was made.
No automatic fallback was used.
No partial result has been presented as complete.
```

More stylised:

```text
I have taken the liberty of changing nothing.
```

```text
The original has been left exactly as we found it.
```

```text
No liberties have been taken with your data.
```

```text
The existing arrangement remains entirely undisturbed.
```

AE00 - The distilled vocabulary of actions

Useful action introducers:

```text
Please...
Please kindly...
You may...
To continue, please...
Before trying again, please...
If this is expected, please...
If the difficulty persists, please...
When convenient, please...
The most direct remedy is to...
The next useful step is to...
You may resolve the matter by...
```

The critical rule remains:

```text
Make the action clearer than the joke.
```

AF00 - The distilled vocabulary of respectful endings

Messages do not always need a sign-off, but longer ones can use:

```text
Thank you for your patience.
Much obliged.
With apologies for the interruption.
With regret.
With due caution.
Yours faithfully.
Yours apologetically.
With considerable embarrassment.
With renewed determination.
With every intention of doing better next time.
```

For deliberately comic fatal messages:

```text
I remain,
Your temporarily humbled execution engine.
```

```text
With profound regret,
The Runtime.
```

```text
Yours in diminished confidence,
The Compiler.
```

```text
Your chastened but still operational servant,
The Application.
```

These should be rare. Rarity makes them funny.

AG00 - Four intensity registers

The entire system becomes much easier to manage if every phrase belongs to one of four registers.

Register 1 - Light:

```text
Pardon me, but...
I am afraid...
A small matter requires attention.
Please <action>.
```

Register 2 - Formal:

```text
I beg your pardon, but...
I regret to report that...
A regrettable circumstance has arisen.
Please <action>.
```

Register 3 - Ceremonial:

```text
Pardon the interruption.
It falls to me to report that...
I should not like to proceed without...
Might I ask you to <action>?
```

Register 4 - Theatrical:

```text
I am inconsolably ashamed to confess that...
With profound embarrassment...
The application has made rather a spectacle of itself.
I beg your forgiveness for this regrettable display.
```

Then products can choose intensity by event.

For example:

```text
Invalid email                  -> Register 1
Permission denied              -> Register 2
Destructive confirmation       -> Register 3
Unhandled internal exception   -> Register 4
```

This prevents every message from sounding equally ornate.

AH00 - The compositional formula

The strongest general formula is:

```text
[OPENING]
[FACT]
[CONTEXT]
[ASSURANCE]
[ACTION]
```

Example:

```text
I beg your pardon, but
the requested report could not be exported
because "Quarterly Forecast.xlsx" is presently open for exclusive editing.
No file has been overwritten.
Please close the workbook and try the export once more.
```

A more ornate version:

```text
Pardon the interruption.
A small disagreement has arisen between the export service and
"Quarterly Forecast.xlsx", which is presently engaged elsewhere.
No attempt has been made to wrest the file from its current proprietor, and
nothing has been overwritten.
Please close the workbook and try the export once more.
```

Same semantics. Different register.

AI00 - The "Bespoke transformation"

A practical transformation algorithm for ordinary messages is:

```text
1. Remove accusation.
2. Add a courteous entrance.
3. Turn "error" into a circumstance.
4. State the exact technical fact.
5. State what remained untouched.
6. Give one concrete action.
7. Add restrained personification if useful.
8. Add theatrical self-deprecation only when deserved.
```

Example:

```text
Invalid confirmation.
```

becomes:

```text
I beg your pardon, but the confirmation did not quite match the wording
required for an operation of this consequence.
Please type exactly:
yes, please proceed
Nothing has been changed.
```

Example:

```text
Connection refused.
```

becomes:

```text
Pardon the interruption, but the service at <host>:<port> is not presently
receiving visitors.
The connection was refused before the request was submitted.
Please verify that the service is running and listening on the expected port.
```

Example:

```text
Internal server error.
```

becomes:

```text
With considerable embarrassment, I must admit that your perfectly reasonable
request has exposed a difficulty within the application itself.
Request: <request_id>
Operation: <operation>
No successful result has been recorded.
Please try once more. If the difficulty persists, provide reference
<request_id> to support.
```

AJ00 - The core style in one sentence

The style can ultimately be reduced to this:

```text
Treat every interaction as courteous correspondence between competent parties,
describe failures as regrettable circumstances rather than accusations, retain
precise technical truth, explicitly state what did and did not happen, refuse
to guess, and conclude with an unmistakable next action.
```

And the shortest implementation rule is:

```text
POLITENESS + PRECISION + STATE + ACTION
```

The humour comes from making `POLITENESS` disproportionately elaborate while never weakening `PRECISION`, `STATE`, or `ACTION`.
